Have you heard about the Google’s new search engine algorithm? No? Well, then let me introduce you to Google’s Penguin search engine algorithm. It’s not as fluffy as Google’s Panda but it still gives quite a punch to those search engine optimization (SEO) best practices and search engine rankings for blogs as well as personal and business websites. Here’s the breakdown on both algorithms so you can see how it may affect you and your online brand.
When Google first launched it search engine algorithm, Panda, it was said by Google that:
“This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.”
In Human SEOtm terms, the Panda update was to help wean out the low quality websites to bring the higher quality ones to their users. This update hit website owners very hard and many saw their website rankings drop like rock. Low quality websites included those that were keyword stuffed, were content farms and that added little value to readers. The result was a scurry of webmasters working quickly to increase the quality of their website content and fix any issues that would have the algorithm see their content as being duplicate content of another website or even on their own.
In essence, Google Panda looks at human experience and human engagement.
On April 24, 2012, Google launched the newest large algorithm update called “Penguin”. According to Google, this was an: “important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines.”
Unfortunately, that statement leaves a lot to guess about so let’s look a little closer.
The Penguin search engine algorithm looks for black hat SEO tactics that are demonstrated through irrelevant linking and webspam. Other black hat SEO tactics can include cloaking, deliberate duplicate content creation, keyword stuffing and linking schemes.
In essence, Google Penguin looks at the technical experience and unethical SEO tactics.
If you’ve been seeing a down turn in your SEO rankings, don’t panic, as there can be a number of contributing factors. If you are practicing white hat SEO tactics and strategies, then it is most likely a simple technological change or that you are lacking in human engagement on your website to allow for social sharing.
There are many simple changes that can help you rank higher with either Google search engine algorithm. Just make sure that you hire an ethical SEO consultant and that they convey a sense of partnership in regards to your online branding.
The more intuitive the search engines become, the more need there is for a long-term SEO strategy that works both onsite and well as offsite. Long gone are the days of setting SEO and forgetting about it. Today, it is about Human SEOtm – combining the understanding of human search patterns with technical expertise – to work with you as a success partner.
