When Apple first came out with the iPod it transformed the way we listened to music. And over a decade on music is now synonymous with Apple’s personalized jukebox. Today almost everyone owns an iPod, it has become a necessity rather than a luxury. No matter where you go; to the shops or for a jog, chances are your iPod goes with you.
Most Americans spend close to 2 hours in their daily car commute and given the traffic snarls today music can make the journey much more bearable. But to make your car iPod compatible you’ll need to get your hands on a few accessories. As this article from How Stuff Works shows you the 5 must have iPod car accessories.
Stereos built specifically for iPodsApple thought better of making their own car stereos and putting other stereo makers out of business and now collaborate with car companies to provide built in iPod compatibility. Systems like the Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT and Alpine iDA-X305 allow you to access your music from the head unit itself. They even let you view the album art on the head unit.
You can even access your music from the steering controls on your car.
Other car iPod accessoriesFM TransmitterThis little gadget can transmit the songs from your iPod to the in car stereo when both the devices are tuned into the same frequency. There are different types of transmitters; one uses the charging cable itself as the antenna, then there are wireless as ones as well but have a poor output.
iPod adaptersTransmitters can be plagued with interference but that can be taken care of if go for adapters. They can be hooked on to your CD changer which then plays songs from your iPod. You can even go for an AUX-in or auxiliary input that has two mini jacks on each end.
Backup PowerWhen you hook up your iPod to your car your iPod’s battery tends to drain faster. So to avoid uninterrupted music you’ll need a backup charger that hooks into your cigarette lighter.
iPod MountNo one would like their iPod to be knocked around the car while they are driving. So if you want to prevent your beloved iPod from permanent damage, get a mount. There are mounts that can be fixed to aircon vents and suction clamps that can be fixed to the windshield.
ExcerptUnless you’ve got one of the latest iPod-compatible cars (or until Apple, the maker of the iPod, designs a car), you’ll have to make do and figure out how to adapt your iPod to your vehicle.View full story
